But what changes? And when?

I agree that raising our consciousness, and focusing on and communicating from "Love" are key to the shift. But fear is the antithesis of love, and there is a great deal of fear.

I was just discussing a healing model with a friend, who pointed-out that when people are at their most fearful or the point of highest stress and anxiety, you can't expect them to change (or rather you can, but probably won't get the desired result).

Change is itself stressful. So you have to either calm people and support them in their change, or wait until THEY feel ready. Or leave the others behind, which I question whether that would be the most "loving" thing to do.

There are always thought leaders who are usually the strongest and most visible advocates for the change. And then, there are those who quietly go about the work of supporting people when and where possible.

This is where I see myself. I am not a thought leader or trail blazer, but I am able to support people lovingly.

Inner Reality -Exploring Transformation

There's the everyday reality in which we have lives, careers, families, friends and lovers, where we eat and sleep and make love but there are also these inner worlds. The inner worlds are the worlds of things hidden, of the indigenous mystic where the laws of cause and effect don't work in the same way. The transformational community consists of people who understand that it's possible for individuals like us to learn how to access these inner worlds for power, for protection and for support.

These are folks who know that within these inner worlds, there are personalities, there are beings, the indigenous people call them spirits, and these are compassionate forces which are willing to come into relationship with human beings in order to help us in various ways. But first we have to turn in their direction and ask them to do so.

These are people who know that everything is connected to everything else. And that underlying the fabric of reality that we all take so much for granted, there is a net or a grid or a matrix of power. This is one of the signatures of our consciousness age, the awareness of these interconnections between everyone and everything everywhere. It's creating an emerging sub-culture which is increasingly finding its voice in the time in which we live.

Hank Wesselman PhD.

The Red Stone

First Published Friday, November 12th, 2006

Someone from another site has asked me why I use the Red Stone for my logo? The short answer is that it symbolizes a value that is fundamental to my worldview.

I had taken a workshop at Elk Island National Park (near Edmonton, Alberta). A local Shamanic practitioner, (I don't think she calls herself a Shaman) holds an annual retreat to teach people how to get in touch with the natural world and the non-ordinary reality, (some people refer to this as the Spirit Realm).

The weekend was full of rituals and celebrations and we did half a dozen exercises that were geared to increasing awareness, trusting intuition, and opening-up to a broader definition of spirituality.

For me, the most significant activity was this:

We were asked to wander away from the camp and dowsing with a pendulum, find 7 stones - 4 to represent the directions and 3 for any intentions that came to mind while we were undertaking this task. We spent the next hour or two gathering stones, thinking about the presence of Spirit in all things and anticipating what would happen next, (the Red Stone was not one of the stones I found that day).

When we returned, we were asked to prepare the stones by washing them and decorating them with paint and then blessing them with rattles and incense, (I chose not to paint mine).

Next we were given a demonstration on how to do "Intuitive Readings" by listening for the symbolic messages that the stones would reveal to us. Then finally, after the demonstration we were asked to pair-off and start doing readings for one another. This step, of course, made many people uncomfortable or at least brought-up doubt, but I was moved to embrace it.
The Red Stone was the first stone I added to my original set of seven. I found this lovely red stone when out walking with my children, but had some strange feelings about arbitrarily adding it to my "Spirit Stones." So, I carried it around with me as I tried to discern what to do. I also had questions about how I would discover the meaning of the stone, because I had had an intention in mind when I found each of the others.

Within a week or so, I realized that I should include it with the others and I decided that because of the redness, it would stand for "passion." But when I started doing readings with it I discovered that it really represents something more like "motivation" and that it actually has 3 subtly different meanings, the most powerful of which is "the best outcome for all concerned."

I feel completely at ease doing these readings and I now understand that I have a gift. In the intervening two years have done more than a hundred readings and people are continually impressed with the information that is revealed to me by the stones and through intuition. The original set now consists of 12 stones, two bones, and a little metal wedge, (and I use another set of six stones for energy work).

Interesting to note is that one of my closest friends and a man who is quite clairvoyant recently said to me that "I sense there is a Shaman archetype emerging through you" (me). It's a weird thing for me to comprehend, but I'm trusting that by following this path, I am indeed moving towards that intention - "the best outcome for all concerned."

Source Of the Power of Ritual

What many neophytes don't realize is that the right attitude amplifies the power of your ritual practice. Ritual is a sort-of language that transmits information through gestures and metaphors.

Whether you are a serious amateur or a dabbler, your practice will be more intense and more profound, when you adopt a reverent attitude, take all the time you need, and have extremely clear intentions. This will increase the "amplitude and frequency" of the signal you're sending out into the Universe. The power of ritual is in being present; clear; intentional.

Shamanism, Healing and Divination

But please note that divination is not solely to be left to the Shamans. We all want a pay raise; we all want to reduce our taxes; we all want a beautiful boy friend/girl friend/spouse... we want consumer goods (TVs, I-Pods, cell phones, cars, clothes)... we want privileges (move to the head of the line, graduate from the best college/university, and have someone else school our children and clean our toilets).

But with each of these choices comes a thief that sneaks-into our minds: The TV brings mass marketing and a blatant censorship, they tell only part of the story and program us to buy more/do more/have more fun; to believe "War is Noble," that "major-league sports" are truly important; that Muslims/Christians/Jews and everybody else are a threat; that pharmaceutical medicines are good but natural medicines are bad.

Schools propagate social problems and learning problems, they encourage psychoactive drug therapies and are "Socially Engineering" each next generation to be passive, obedient, selfish workers who will populate our world and who will: Buy the car - and ignore the pollution. Buy the imported clothes - and ignore the sweatshop. Use the cell phone (or the pharmaceutical medicines) - and ignore the VERY REAL health hazards...

We are also being programmed to date the pretty girl or the handsome boy, have the big wedding - and live happily ever after while getting deeper and deeper into credit card debt, obesity and clinical depression.

Wow, that all seems like I'm pretty pessimistic.

I'm not, (or at least NOT THAT pessimistic).

God Model

I was sort of meditating/daydreaming back in March 2007 when I got this little model downloaded (does that ever happen to you?).

The word ALL in the center is equivalent to "The Great Spirit, Creator, Divine." "The Four Insights - Wisdom, Power & Grace of the Earthkeepers" by Alberto Villoldo Ph.D. (He's one of about eight people I call "Ph.D. Shamans.")

"Re-storying" is associated with EFT and other modalities that help us change our beliefs. In energy healing, we need simply to change where we hold our energy, or what we're holding onto, to make incredible healing possible. If a person has been holding onto a negative self-concept, or a negative interpretation of circumstances, often changing their ideas about the meaning of their experience is extremely empowering.

Here, I quote Alberto Villoldo [square parentheses indicate paraphrasing]:

Your story isn't new, it's a replay of what happened to you in your childhood which is a retelling of the same plot you've played-out over the course of many lifetimes. It's the same tale that drew you to the family you were born into because it dove-tailed so well with theirs. It's also the saga you inherited from your father and mother, the one they were unable to heal... then you pass them on to your children... In the Amazon they call these "ancestral curses."

If you want to get rid of your baggage, it's important to honour your ancestors; if you don't they will continue living through you and haunting every endeavor and relationship in your life. But if you respect and celebrate them, no matter how awful their legacy, you can move on... and so can they. You change your ancestral story and break the curse, for them and for your children. You won't feel hurt and angry as you remember that your father walked-out on your family, or cling to the story of how that's the reason you feel you can't trust romantic partners.

Karma runs in families. A cold mother raises a child who becomes a smothering mom, who raises a daughter who as a result of being smothered, doesn't even want children.... Someone has to make a conscious decision to re-write the story...

When we re-write our story, we elevate our ancestors from the gutter, no longer holding them responsible for our lives, and we break the negative legacies they've handed down to us. We let go of stories such as "I'm a neurotic mess because my mother was completely crazy" or "I'm angry and misunderstood, just like my father and his father before him." We're no longer victims of the folly of our ancestors-instead we can honour them and thank them for their gifts, no matter how painful it was to receive them.

Journaling Exercise: Re-Story Your Life

Write two stories. The first is the story you've been telling yourself for many years that begins with, "Once upon a time, the stork dropped off a baby at the wrong house..." Write a narrative of your life visiting details of your parents, siblings, relationships, marriage and the career that didn't work out right. Write it as a fairy tale that happened to someone long ago. Make note of the times that you were the victim, the perpetrator and the rescuer, and who else you cast in these same roles.

When you finish, write the story again, but start off the story, "Once upon a time, the stork dropped off a baby at the right house..." Healing stories explain why events happened exactly as they were supposed to in order to bring you valuable lessons that would take you farther along on your epic journey.

Perhaps you were abused as a child- but this was just what your soul needed for you to learn the lessons about strength and compassion you required, and you chose the perfect home to be dropped off at. (Of course it's terrible to be abused, but remember, what you are writing here is an epic journey of lessons and healing.) Because your parents were abusive you might have learned that those who openly disparage others in an attempt to hurt them are deeply insecure and unhappy, and it has nothing to do with you. Maybe you even found a grain of truth in their words. Or perhaps the lesson you gleaned was that you can accept that you're imperfect, and decide just how much effort you want to make to change, without feeling pressured to "fix" yourself to meet anyone's expectations.

[If you feel uncomfortable writing the story because you haven't mastered the lessons yet, that's OK-write as if you have. You might also want to come back to it again later to put in more observations. When you begin to believe this new tale, it will start to come true. You will have become the storyteller of your own life; as a result, the Universe, recognizing that you have learned your lessons will stop putting you back in the classroom.]

In retelling our stories, we uncover the positive, empowering legacy that we've been given. For example the Laika [Shamans of the Andes] hold the memory of the Conquistador not as a devastating force that destroyed their world (which is the popular view) but as a catalyst for an age in which they would be especially careful to guard and value the [sacred teachings. Because the Wisdom was hidden, it became even more powerful since there would come a time when it would be expressed again and would be able to help the entire human race survive. The Laika believe that without the Conquistador they might have become lazy and complacent and allowed their sacred insights to be forgotten].

Remember that we can only rewrite our stories at the mythic level. [If you have teenagers that will soon go to college, you might have to work long hours to finance it so you can't spend your days painting watercolors (which is what you would prefer). Those are the facts. However, at the level of the sacred, your story might be that you are an artist, that your canvas is the world, and that you touch everyone with colour and life. Own your mythic story. Don't define yourself as your job or as a parent who is putting kids through college- you are a painter and a poet who just happens to have a day job.]

[When you do this, you will find that time will appear for your art. Allow yourself permission to explore who you are. Bravely embrace your many characters, but don't 'become' any of them. Instead, surprise yourself as your many selves come out from where they have been hiding.]

[Of course when you shed your stories, those who are investing in your rubber stamp identity may drift away, unsure of how to relate to the father who has become an activist or the brother who quit his good job to become a world traveler. If you look to others for permission, you will probably be disappointed.]

[We have a hard time embracing the fact that we could be a champion dogsled racer or that we can learn to play base guitar. But when we break away from our limited ideas about who we are it becomes easier to acknowledge the mythic traveler and the poet.]

Shaman Path

The late, brilliant alternative thinker Terence McKenna (1946-2000) spoke eloquently about the shaman's role in society. Many videos, articles and interviews are available which present McKenna's thinking and experiences. These ideas have helped me reflect on my own path. I quote here Bartley R. Troyan: Newsgroups: alt.drugsSubject: "Re: Evolution" by T.McKenna Fri, 24 Jun 1994. Transcribed from a song on Shamen's album _Boss Drum_, called "Re: Evolution", written by McKenna, Angus, and West.

"A shaman is someone who has been to the end, it's someone who knows how the world really works, and knowing how the world really works means to have risen outside, above, beyond the dimensions of ordinary space, time, and causality, and actually seen the wiring under the board, stepped outside the confines of learned culture and learned and embedded language, into the domain of what Wittgenstein called "the unspeakable", the transcendental presense of the other, which can be absanctioned, in various ways, to yield systems of knowledge which can be brought back into ordinary social space for the good of the community, so in the context of ninety percent of human culture, the shaman has been the agent of evolution, because the shaman learns the techniques to go between ordinary reality and the domain of the ideas, this higher dimensional continuum that is somehow parallel to us, available to us, and yet ordinarily occluded by cultural convention out of fear of the mystery I believe, and what shamans are, I believe, are people who have been able to de-condition themselves from the community's instinctual distrust of the mystery, and to go into it, to go into this bewildering higher dimension, and gain knowledge, recover the jewel lost at the beginning of time, to save souls, cure, commune with the ancestors and so forth and so on.

Shamanism is not a religion, it's a set of techniques, and the principal technique is the use of psychedelic plants. What psychedelics do is they dissolve boundaries, and in the presence of dissolved boundaries, one cannot continue to close one's eyes to the ruination of the earth, the poisoning of the seas, and the consequences of two thousand years of unchallenged dominator culture, based on monotheism, hatred of nature, suppression of the female, and so forth and so on. So, what shamans have to do is act as exemplars, by making this cosmic journey to the domain of the Gaian ideas, and then bringing them back in the form of art to the struggle to save the world. The planet has a kind of intelligence, that it can actually open a channel of communication with an individual human being. The message that nature sends is, transform your language through a synergy between electronic culture and the psychedelic imagination, a synergy between dance and idea, a synergy between understanding and intuition, and dissolve the boundaries that your culture has sanctioned between you, to become part of this Gaian supermind, I mean I think it's fairly profound, it's fairly apocalyptic. History is ending. I mean, we are to be the generation that witnesses the revelation of the purpose of the cosmos. History is the shock wave of the eschaton. History is the shock wave of eschatology, and what this means for those of us who will live through this transition into hyperspace, is that we will be privileged to see the greatest release of compressed change probably since the birth of the universe. (display) signs of experience that the client can recognize and acknowledge as true. Once the client understands that he or she is not alone, and that the experience of the shaman in fact encompasses their own experience, they can submit to allowing the shaman to lead them out of their current predicament and on toward another place—one hopefully more comfortable for them. The act of realizing that they are not alone, and that someone else has had similar experiences, is often a key step for a client in this process..."

I believe we all can learn to heal each other through this method of deep understanding.

Reading the Shaman Stones

So you’d like to learn an easy method for divination? Casting stones is one of the oldest and simplest methods of divination still in practice today. I have used this method for a number of years, always with pleasing accuracy.

This type of reading is excellent for revealing our blind spots and for insight into areas of life we usually to avoid. It is also possible to look at a snapshot in time, but free will and "the Butterfly Effect" insure that predicting the future is difficult. At any rate, my teachers tell me, "we have to learn to deal with our present before anything else."

7 ordinary stones, a bit of cloth and a pendulum will be your tools. Follow this link to learn how to select and prepare your stones. Follow this link to learn to use the pendulum.

Have the querrant hold the stones in their left hand and think of a question or a specific area of their life for which they want guidance. A question can focus the reading, allowing you to give more specific answers.

Write down the question, or if they request insight into a specific area of their life, write that down in the form of a question. It may be necessary to repeat the sentences aloud 2 or 3 different ways, changing the emphasis and order of the words until the answer feels right. Trust your intuition to help you.

First notice which stones are closest to the querrant. Which are in the middle? What are their meanings? These may represent important themes for the reading.

Next, check to see if any of the stones are lined-up in straight, curved or diagonal lines, (even if they are far apart across the leather form).

Also, consider the over-all shape or pattern made by the stones and ask the querrant if they can see any thing – you will sometimes imagine a number, a letter, perhaps a bird, or another recognizable shape. Ask if this shape is significant.

If something is unclear, use your pendulum to ask your intuition for clarification.

Here is how the sample reading above would be interpreted:

· West is the closest stone to the querrant indicating that the theme of the reading is communication.

· Moon + North + F&F are grouped together (almost touching). This could mean that the querrant could feel a subconscious pull toward more “spiritual” pursuits.

· Sun + North + F&F + East aligned may mean that the querrant's family life will take on an aspect of spiritual growth.

· Health + F&F + Moon + West reveals that the querrrant should talk about their emotional health with their friends and family.

· The spread seems to symbolize an airplane, which could literally mean air travel or metaphorically that things are about to “take-off.”

Learning Divination

Some one asked me an interesting question about psychic readings. She said, "So is it divination with the tarot that you practice? Do you think that just anyone has the ability to 'learn?' I know that we all have hidden psychic skills that have been blunted by time and our ever decreasing need to use them... as we are not the hunted any more.. but do you think that everyone can bring them out?"

Yes, I do think everyone can learn to do divination. We are all connected to the Source through our higher consciousness. But the biggest hurdle is actually "believing" that we can do it. What we expect to happen,or what we want to happen, is often disrupted by what we believe will happen.

If you want to learn to read the "Shaman Stones" or the "Tarot Cards" you will work on the techniques and develop the skills only if you believe you are capable of doing divination. The curious thing is that we can hold 2 mutually exclusive or conflicting beliefs at the same time, and we don't recognize that we do this. You may believe for instance that everyone has innate psychic skills but that you yourself aren't psychic. If you aren't, then 'everyone' doesn't have them but if everyone does, then you must also.

Follow this link to learn to do psychic readings with Shaman Stones.

Contacting Spirit Guides with a Pendulum

An important idea which is basic to Shamanic practice is the belief that there are benevolent Spirit entities all around us, (some might know them as guardian angels) who are constantly attending us and available to offer advice.

For those who are interested, there are a couple of ways to contact them.

When you are confident in your ability to journey to the Non-Ordinary Reality, you can visit them and speak directly to them, but if you don't have the time, or privacy to journey, an easy way that I have found is to use a pendulum.

I learned to use the pendulum in this way over 15 years ago as a Neural-Linguistic Programming (NLP) technique for accessing my subconscious mind. In NLP we would address “the part of my subconscious that is addicted to smoking,” or “the part of my memory that has forgotten where my keys are.” Having since taken courses on how to contact Spirit Guides, I have adapted this technique with excellent success.

Focusing my attention on the small-still voice inside me, I ask yes or no questions and the pendulum "swings" in response. Whether the movement is due to my fingers shaking, “the Spirits,” my “Higher Consciousness,” or “God” matters very little, as the presumption is that I am connecting to the “Source of All” and will in this way, be able to ask specific questions of every “entity,” or “Soul Part” that I invoke (request to participate).

As you establish your own method for using the pendulum you can adjust it to suit your style, but while you are learning please do it this way.

After clearing yourself (see below) and performing your ritual to invoke the spirits, hold the pendulum in your left hand, (connects to your right brain which is intuitive and creative), and tuck your elbow snugly against your ribs to steady your arm. Allow about 15 centimeters, (6 inches) of string below your fingers. Be careful to pinch the string or chain in a way that allows it to hang straight-down without leaning on or swinging against any part of your finger. Sometimes the responses you receive are very subtle and you must avoid doing anything that might inhibit your accuracy. Try to hold the pendulum completely still, (don’t be frustrated, it’s OK if it is moving slightly).

Ask your Spirit Guides to show you what a “Yes” answer looks like, (out loud or silently to yourself). The pendulum will swing in a particular way, and you must remember it. Thank the Spirit Guides, then ask to see a “No” answer. The pendulum will swing another way. Again, wait until you’re sure, thank the Spirit Guides, and remember the way it swings. You can also ask, what “Maybe” looks like.

Remember to say thank you, (I say “Hi, Hi,” which is literally “Yes, Yes,’” but means something like “Amen”).

Now test it to see how it works. Ask yourself if your “name is…?” and watch the response. Ask your correct age, and then ask about an incorrect age. Play with this until you are comfortable with all of the variables – the ability to maintain your focus, the way you hold the pendulum in your fingers, the meanings of the way it swings, and your ability to hold the pendulum steady. (It may be a good idea to begin each session by asking what “yes” and “no” answers looks like until you no longer feel it is necessary.)

Or you may begin by asking, “Do I have a Spirit Guide?” or “How many Spirit Guides do I have?… “More than one?” “More than two?...”

In this method, it’s also very important to pay attention to how you ask the questions. You may think you are being clear when actually you are not.

I sometimes ask the same question more than one way just to be clear. “Can I attend the conference next week?” will give you one answer, but “Will attending the conference cause the best outcome for me?” or “Will attending the conference bring the best outcome for all concerned?” might give different answers. See the difference?

And you are best to avoid asking the Spirit World if you “should” undertake a particular course of action. There are many reasons for this, but clearly the Spirit World is unconcerned with money or time, seeing all events and consequences as growing experiences and therefore positive. “Should” questions may lead you to painful experiences or misadventures that might have been avoided if you phrased you question more carefully.

When I want to speak to a particular Spirit Guide, I ask by name, “Rosa Redhawk, please listen to me now…” “Are you there?”

Now you can experiment with speaking to “the Souls of the Departed,” to “God Almighty” or to your “chocolate addiction…” You will doubtless find many useful ways to use this technique and get to know your psyche and your Spirit Guides.

Clearing Yourself

Clearing yourself simply means becoming centered and focused in the present moment. Stress, noise and daily distractions prevent us from hearing our intuition. Also, the extent to which we are “grounded” or not, affects our ability to be present.

You can become quickly grounded by simply laying on the floor or on the ground and paying attention to your breathing.

You can become clear by smudging with smoke from sage, cedar, sweetgrass or incense. Next, cup your hands and draw the smoke up to your ears and ask Spirit to open you to hearing their lessons. Next, cup your hands and draw the smoke up to your eyes and ask Spirit to help you to see clearly. Next, cup your hands and draw the smoke up to your mouth and ask Spirit to guide your words and allow you to speak the truth. Next, cup your hands and draw the smoke up to your heart and ask Spirit to help you listen with your heart.

Now, cup your hands and draw the smoke up to your chest, and gently turning your hands push the smoke down the trunk of your body washing away any negative energy that may be left.

Clearing with Chi Energy

Rub your hands together vigorously and feel how the friction warms them. He called the alchemist to the meeting and said, "Let's go see the boy who turns himself into the wind."
"Let's," the alchemist answered.
The boy took them to the cliff where he had been on the previous day. He told them all to be seated.
"It's going to take a while," the boy said.
"We're in no hurry," the chief answered. "We are men of the desert."
The boy looked out at the horizon. There were mountains in the distance. And there were dunes, rocks, and plants that insisted on living where survival seemed impossible. There was the desert that he had wandered for so many months; despite all that time, he knew only a small part of it. Within that small part he had found an Englishman, caravans, tribal wars, and an oasis with fifty-thousand palm trees and three hundred wells.
"What do you want here today?" the desert asked him. "Didn't you spend enough time looking at me yesterday?"
"Somewhere you are holding the person I love," the boy said. "So, when I lookout over your sands, I am also looking at her. I want to return to her, and I need your help so I can turn myself into the wind."
"What is love?" the desert asked.
"Love is the falcon's flight over your sands. Because for him, you are a green field, from which he always returns with game. He knows your rocks, your dunes, and your mountains and you are generous to him."
"The falcon's beak carries bits of me, myself," the desert said. " For years, I care for this game, feeding it with the little water I have, and then I show him where the game is. And,
one day, as I enjoy the fact that his game thrives on my surface, the falcon dives out of the sky, and takes away what I've created."
" But that's why you created the game in the first place,"the boy answered. "To nourish the falcon. And the falcon then nourishes man. And, eventually, man will nourish your sands, where the game will once again flourish. That's how the world goes."
"So is that what love is?"
"Yes, that's what love is. It's what makes the game become the falcon, the falcon become the man, and the man, in his turn, the desert. It's what turns lead into gold, and makes gold return to the earth."
"I don't understand what you're talking about," the desert said.`
"But you can at least understand that somewhere in your sands there is a woman waiting for me. And that's why I have to turn myself into the wind."
The desert didn't answer him for a few moments.
Then it told him, "I'll give you my sands to help the wind to blow, but alone I can't do anything. You have to ask for help from the wind."
A breeze began to blow. The tribesmen watched the boy from a distance, talking among themselves in a language that the boy couldn't understand.
The alchemist smiled.
The wind approached the boy and touched his face. It knew of the boy's talk with the desert, because the winds know everything. They blow across the world without a birthplace, and with no place to die.
"Help me," the boy said. "One day you carried the voice of my loved one to me."
"Who taught you to speak the language of the desert and the wind?"
"My heart," the boy answered.
The wind has many names. In that part of the world, it was called the sirocco, because it brought moisture from the oceans to the east. In the distant land the boy came from, they called it the levanter, because they believed that it brought with it the sands of the desert, and the screams of the Moorish wars. Perhaps in the places beyond the pastures where his sheep lived, men thought that the wind came from Andalusia. But, actually, the wind came from no place at all, nor did it go any place; that's why it was stronger than the desert. Someone might one day plant trees in the desert, and even raise sheep there, but never would they harness the wind.
"You can't be the wind," the wind said. "We're two very different things."
"That's not true," the boy said. "I learned the alchemist's secrets in my travels. I have inside me the winds, the deserts, the oceans, the stars, and everything created in the universe. We were all made by the same hand, and we have the same soul. I want to be like you, able to reach every corner of the world, cross the seas, blow away the sand that covers my treasure, and carry the voice of the woman I love."
"I heard what you were talking about the other day with the alchemist," the wind said. "He said that everything has its own destiny. But people can't turn themselves into the wind."
"Just teach me to be the wind for a few moments," the boy said. "So you and I can talk about the limitless possibilities of people and the winds."
The wind's curiosity was aroused, something that had never happened before. It wanted to talk about those things, but it didn't know how to turn a man into the wind. And look how many things the wind already knew how to do! It created deserts, sank ships, felled entire forests, and blew through cities filled with music and strange noises. It felt that it had no limits, yet here was a boy saying that there were other things the wind should be able to do.
"This is what we call love," the boy said, seeing that the wind was close to granting what he requested. "When you are loved you can do anything in creation. When you are loved, there's no need at all to understand what's happening, because everything happens within you, and even men can turn themselves into the wind. As long as the wind helps, of course."
The wind was a proud being, and it was becoming irritated with what the boy was saying. It commenced to blow harder, raising the desert sands. But finally it had to recognize that, even making its way around the world, it didn't know how to turn a man into the wind. And it knew nothing about love.
"In my travels around the world, I've often seen people speaking about love and looking toward the heavens," the wind said, furious at having to acknowledge its own limitations. "Maybe its better to ask heaven."
"Well then, help me do that," the boy said. "Fill this place with a sand storm so strong that it blots out the sun. Then I can look to heaven without blinding myself."
So the wind blew with all its strength, and the sky was filled with sand. The sun was turned into a golden disk.
At the camp, it was difficult to see anything. The men of the desert were already familiar with that wind. They called it simum, and it was worse than a storm at sea. Their horses cried out, and all their weapons were filled with sand.
On the heights, one of the commanders turned to the chief and said, "Maybe we had better end this."
They could barely see the boy. Their faces were covered with the blue cloths, and their eyes showed fear.
"Let's stop this," another commander said.
"I want to see the greatness of Allah," the chief said with respect. "I want to see how a man turns himself into the wind."
But he made a mental note of the names of the two men who had expressed their fear. As soon as the wind stopped he was going to remove them from their commands, because true men of the desert are not afraid.
"The wind told me that you know about love," the boy said to the sun. "If you know about love, you must also know about the Soul of the World, because it's made of love."
"From where I am," the sun said, "I can see the Soul of the World. It communicates with my soul, and together we cause the plants to grow and the sheep to seek out shade. From where I am - and I'm a long way from the earth - I learned how to love. I know that if I came even a little bit closer to the earth, everything there would die, and the Soul of the World would no longer exist. So we contemplate each other, and we want each other, and I give it life and warmth, and it gives me my reason for living."
"So you know about love," the boy said.
"And I know the Soul of the World, because we have talked at great length to each other during this endless trip though the universe. It tells me that its greatest problem is that, up until now, only the minerals and vegetables understand that all things are one. That there's no need for iron to be the same as copper, or copper the same as gold. Each performs its own exact function as a unique being, and everything would be a symphony of peace if the hand that had wrote all this had stopped on the fifth day of creation.
"But there was a sixth day," the sun went on.
"You are wise, because you observe everything from a distance," the boy said. "But you don't know about love. If there hadn't been a sixth day, man would not exist; copper would always be just copper, and lead just lead. It's true that everything has its destiny, but one day that destiny will be realized. So each thing has to transform itself into something better, and to acquire a new destiny, until, someday, the Soul of the World becomes one thing only."
The sun thought about that, and decided to shine more brightly. The wind, which was enjoying the conversation, started to blow with greater force, so that the sun would not blind the boy.
"This is why alchemy exists," the boy said. "So that everyone will search for his treasure, find it, and then want to be better than he was in his former life. Lead will play its role until the world has no further need for lead; and then lead will have to turn itself into gold.
"That's what the alchemists do. They show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too."
"Well, why did you say that I don't know about love?" the sun asked the boy.
"Because it's not love to be static like the desert, nor is it love to roam the world like the wind. And it's not love to see everything from a distance, like you do. Love is the force that transforms and improves the Soul of the World. When I first reached through to it, I thought the Soul of the World was perfect. But later, I could see that it was like other aspects of creation, and had its own passions and wars. It is we who nourish the Soul of the World, and the world we live in will be either better or worse, depending on whether we become better or worse. And that's where the power of love comes in. Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are."
"So what do you want of me?" the sun asked.
"I want you to help me turn myself in to the wind," the boy answered.
"Nature knows me as the wisest being in creation," the sun said. "But I don't know how to turn you into the wind."
"Then, whom should I ask?"
The sun thought for a minute. The wind was listening closely, and wanted to tell every corner of the world that the sun's wisdom had its limitations. That it was unable to deal with this boy who spoke the Language of the World.
"Speak to the hand that wrote all," said the sun.
The wind screamed with delight, and blew harder than ever. The tents were being blown from their ties to the earth, and the animals were being freed from their tethers. On the cliff, the men clutched at each other as they sought to keep from being blown away.
The boy turned to the hand that wrote all. As he did so, he sensed that the universe had fallen silent, and he decided not to speak.
A current of love rushed from his heart, and the boy began to pray. It was a prayer that he had never said before, because it was a prayer without words or pleas. His prayer didn't give thanks for his sheep having found new pastures; it didn't ask that the boy be able to sell more crystal; and it didn't beseech that the woman he had met would continue to await his return. In the silence, the boy understood that the desert, the wind, and the sun were also trying to understand the signs written by the hand, and were seeking to follow their paths, and to understand what had been written on a single emerald. He saw that omens were scattered throughout the earth and in space, and that there was no reason or significance attached to their appearance; he could see that not the deserts, nor the winds, nor the sun, nor people knew why they had been created. But that the hand had a reason for all of this, and that only the hand could perform miracles, or transform the sea into a desert... or a man into the wind. Because only the hand understood that it was a larger design that had moved the universe to the point at which six days of creation had evolved into a Master Work.
The boy reached through to the Soul of the World, and saw that it was part of the Soul of God. And he saw that the Soul of God was his own soul. And that he, a boy, could perform miracles.

- Excerpted from Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist," English version by Harper Collins

Shift Your Consciousness Internally

The subtle shifts in thinking, the heightened awareness that leads to the alternate states of consciousness and ultimately to the expanded consciousness of enlightenment require practice. Some find the practice difficult, (read hard work), but more find it difficult to make their spiritual practices a priority in their lives.

There are a lot of people I refer to as Ph.D. Shamans, (see Alberto Villoldo; Michael Harner) who have studied and practiced in both the western and shamanic traditions of thought and healing. They are important "opinion leaders" at this epoch of "New Age" cultural development, but we westerners tend to put so much emphasis on credentialism and pedigree that we lose sight of the need for our own practice. I remember a story about Jesus who, being a supremely enlightened individual, encouraged his followers to heal others and to use their faith to create miracles. The followers in turn, (apart from a few Apostles) fell to their knees in reverent worship, almost completely missing the invitation to elevate the spirit of all people and therefore raise the consciousness of the human race. But do we give away our power to cultural heroes and thought leaders in the same way?

I'm afraid we are a society of "tryers." We claim that we "try to get good grades" in school and that we "try to be nice to others," but that word "try" is almost meaningless. I saw a demonstration of this a few years ago and was reminded again recently.
"Try" this yourself - right now. "'Try' to pick-up your pen!"

Did you pick it up?

Either you did or didn't, but what happened in between wasn't trying - not exactly. Presuming you have the physical capacity, what you did, whether you are aware of it or not, is you shifted your consciousness to a space where you intended to do it, (or not), and then effortlessly manifested that intention.

I think that schooling, (in the North American sense), teaches us among other things to forgive ourselves in advance for potential failure. We learn that it's OK to "try" and fail, because the answers are in the back of the book. But when we graduate to real-life questions, where there are no right or wrong answers, that attitude is no longer useful. That attitude leads to the life of "quiet desperation" that H. D. Thoreau talked about... the feeling that we lack the power to change our lives.

A moment ago you shifted your consciousness and effortlessly manifested your intention.

Compare that with your first experience of dressing yourself or singing or riding a bicycle... Do you get it? We either do something or not. We might not do it well the first few times, (but that might be due to our flagging intention rather than our suitability to the activity).

Now think about meditation. The first time you attempted meditation, did you "intend" to touch that great pool of consciousness... or did you just "try" to meditate? How could your experience change if you began each meditation session with the belief and intention that you would have a mystical experience?

My Shadow

My keen eye reveals my gentle prey.
My Shadow snarls and shouts and I kill the small bird.
My mother chastises and coos and shames me for my act.
My father frets and turns red, and slams the door as he leaves to do his chores.

In my Shadow Life I kill the bird;
feel remorse in the violent act;
grieve for the bird and for the child's lost innocence -
then I take myself in my arms and love me fiercely for my humanness.

And I love my experience for its ancient wisdom.

Shamanic Living

Shamanism as a methodology affords its practitioners to live fully in the everyday, ordinary reality of life, and at the same time access non-ordinary states of consciousness at will for the purposes of healing, advice or gaining understanding. In indigenous cultures, the shaman acts as the psychological and medical healer of his community. Non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by the steady beat of a drum, physical deprivations such as fasting or ingestion of enthenogens have been employed by nearly all mystical wisdom traditions; they allow practitioners to discover how to live a richer, more meaningful life. Shamanism, together with quantum physics and chaos theory, which I encountered during my studies at Bryn Mawr, gave me answers to the questions I had asked since childhood: Who are we? Whence do we come from? Where do we go? My travels to Ecuador, Nepal and Peru and my studies there with powerful shamans provided additional answers to these perennial questions. All my teachers, in ordinary and non-ordinary reality, assist me in developing and shaping my intellectual, spiritual, intuitive and psychic faculties. At this point in my life I feel so capable to participate joyfully in the universal dance of life. (By Jeanne-Rachel Salomon ’00)

Darkest Night

For more than 5o,ooo years the most important ritual between the first snowfall and planting has been the Winter Solstice.

Interesting to note is that one of my closest friends and a man who is quite clairvoyant recently said to me that "I sense there is a Shaman archetype emerging through you (me)." It's a weird thing for me to comprehend, but I'm trusting that by following this path, I am indeed moving towards that intention - "the best outcome for all concerned."

Communicating with Light

I called a friend on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, just to catch-up on things. At the moment I called him, "Cole" needed a solution to a "situation" he was experiencing.

When I called he was having a heated discussion with a collaborator about the details of a project and she was getting a bit ruffled by his tone and his insistence that there was a need for closer examination of some of their core assumptions. I called at that precise moment, explained to Cole's colleague what his issues were and therefore deftly averted an all-out argument.

He was thinking about me. I called. How does that work?

I'm reading "Urban Shaman, A Handbook for Personal and Planetary Transformation Based on the Hawaiian Way of the Adventurer" (Fireside/Simon & Schuster - 1990), by Serge Kahili King Ph.D.. He describes how in many cultural traditions, what is experienced as daily life is actually believed to be a dream (consensus reality). They believe that if you don't like what what you're experiencing you need only change what you're dreaming.

For example, I can hit a wall with my hand and I can tell it's solid because I hear a "THUD" and anyone present might also hear the sound... but science shows us that the wall is really made-up of atoms which are vibrating energy particles with a lot of space in between. Radio waves and other energy patterns can pass right through walls so what makes me believe in their solid form?

What if I were to practice seeing a wall as a special pattern of energy? Could I learn to walk through walls like a spirit? Maybe, maybe not. But what if I practiced on less persistent illusions? What if I start seeing the glass as half-full instead of half empty? What if I choose to see opportunities where I used to see problems?

I spend a huge portion of my time on the computer, chatting, planning, e-mailing and researching... all the while pushing keys with my fingers to activate patterns of light energy on a plasma screen. I imagine electrons going out into the energy field and manifesting as patterns of light somewhere else.

Look at that. I think; the ideas jump into existence as sparks in my brain; those sparks shoot out through the nerves in my fingertips and into the world of the electronic communication; are perceived as patterns of light on a screen elsewhere and gathered-up into sparks in someone else's brain.

Did I actually "do" anything?

If everything is made-up of atoms (energy patterns), do we really need computers to "do" that?

Did I somehow know that Cole needed me to call when I did?

Reading Between the Lines

I do intuitive readings. I listen for intuition to help me read the symbolic language of my "Stones." The resulting "story" is like a snapshot of the energy and influences in one's life. These are special stones and each has a very specific and often subtle meaning, much like Tarot cards.

I use the words "special" and "symbolic language," but everything comes to us as symbolism. After all, we're stuck in our heads or in our perceptions. We have this consensus reality and we all pretend that we understand each other but we rely on mostly assumptions and this thing we call common sense. In reality, do we really agree what makes sense and how much is actually common? There's this anthropologist, Michael Harner who has described two realities: Ordinary Reality (OR) and Non-ordinary Reality (NOR) and it's worth considering how this assertion effects our view of the world we live in.

I know a woman who at age 50 still believes in faeries and gnomes (NOR). This seems uncommon, (almost weird), but it might be more common in our collective consciousness (OR) if we weren't so critical of people who stand-out. I mean, if we didn't say "sheesh!" every time someone said something we couldn't get our heads around, there might be more people who shared their experiences - you know? Like children do.

The fact that most of us operate on this single level we call "reality" proves nothing. What about priests, rabbis and psychic mediums who make it their "business" to understand spiritual matters? Who would deny that they actually believe in another "reality" and that we can participate in it on the spiritual level?

Are we just avoiding the signs that invite us to experience a mystical dimension? This is an important distinction and an important paradigm for thinking about what we think we know "for sure."

As for me, I'm relying on my intuition, which tells me there's more to know about consciousness than our consensus reality can explain.

Teachers

As a former art teacher I recognize that many people fear that life won't bring them what they want. I saw this repeatedly in my classes: someone who used to love to play with paint and crayons is afraid that they might not get acceptable results, (their painting might not be within that narrow range we call beautiful). But why do we allow the fear of not measuring-up to stop us pursuing what we LOVE? Why do we listen to the doubt instead of the LOVE?

Sure, some people LIVE LARGE, but many "lead lives of quiet desperation." This is one of the greatest challenges in our society; where education is based on a factory model; where everyone is expected to rise to the status quo and those who reach higher are call selfish and greedy. (Some people or organizations may indeed be greedy, but that doesn't mean that if I choose to step-out, to reach for my GREATNESS, that I am selfish.)

Selfishness is a moot point. We live on an abundant planet in an infinitely abundant universe. There's more than enough for everyone. We are at a point in human history where consciousness is evolving, where pernicious problems are being dissolved rather than solved and it's not just our right but our responsibility to be great.

So, it seems that visionaries, or healers, or even just friends who are sensitive enough, can play an important role in moving us forward - in helping us get beyond the fear that's holding us back. Remember those beautiful words (often attributed to Nelson Mandela, but originating with Marianne Williamson) "We ask ourselves, 'who am I to be so brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are we not to be?"

Now back to the fear. What is it you want? Freedom? Money? Fame? Talent?

What's stopping you? The need to change? The fear that you don't have what it takes?

How can you get beyond the fear?

Choose Joy!

The Human Organism is hardwired to move toward joyful/healing energy and away from negative/painful energy. It's probably related to the "Fight or Flight" response which originates in our Lizard Brain, (Brain Stem).

As far as things like Tarot Cards, Lottery Tickets and Love relationships are concerned, I've always been a conscientious observer: I've done readings with Tarot Cards, I've bought lottery tickets and have had serious/meaningful long-term relationships, but if you ask me to guarantee the outcome I can't. That's because, although I concede that "things happen for a reason,"I don't believe that everything is "predestined." My ex-wife and I were no more "meant to be together" than we were "meant to break-up."

I believe we are given choices that can either help us uncover more about our authentic selves (what we are drawn to or replused from) or allow us to follow the same patterns that have repeatedly held us back. We are free to choose to either grow or not.

If I'm chronically late (which I am), and my boss, deciding that it's disrespectful, "fires my ass," (which has happened to me before), at what point do I choose a more useful pattern? And perhaps the more interesting question: "How do I choose what I choose?"

It seems that we make Emotional choices. I can be fired from a hundred jobs I don't like and it won't have as much impact as getting a reprimand at a job I really like. Or to put it another way, I can be late for a movie with a buddy and it won't bother me, but if my girlfriend breaks-up with me because I arrived late for the theatre again after I promised her "I won't be late this time," it will cause me a great emotional upset. Happily, my girlfriend isn't that up-tight, but look at that motive. I choose to change when the negative consequence is sufficiently painful. I chose to turn away from an aspect of my personality, because it was an emotional liability.

How do we choose a mate? Same way, but different.

Here's why "chemistry" is so important. There's this BIG emotional charge that pulls us toward a change in our patterns of behaviour. But it's a positive charge. We're so turned-on to the benefits, (love, approval, sex) that we almost don't consider the down-side, (obligation, loss of freedom).

We should choose a career the same way. To do the work, to study, to practice, these take discipline. And that kind of discipline comes from loving what you do. Or, loving who you are becoming.

We should make all of our choices this way. Love what you do. Choose from a place of Joy.
